It is reported that the new physical layer specification (Gen-Z Physical Layer Specification 1.1) uses the PCIe physical layer and the modified IEEE 802.3 Ethernet layer standard to provide 56 GT/s transmission rates per channel.

Gen-Z 1.0 Physical Layer Specification defines only the PCIe Gen 1-4 protocol and the usage of 25 GT/s PHY. Therefore, it is necessary to use all the functions of Gen-Z 1.0 Core Specification and comply with Gen-Z PHY, which describes the layer logic, functions, electrical and channel characteristics of various PHY.

In addition, the revised Gen-Z 1.1 also outlines how to implement Gen-ZE-PAM4-50G-Fabric links and BCH ultra-low delay forward error correction (Phit FEC) coding at the original data rate of 53.125 GT/s per channel using four-stage pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) signals.

Finally, in addition to the 1.1 revised physical layer specification, Gen-Z also proposes eight final specifications and five draft specifications.
