Behind Samsung are two Japanese brands, Sharp and Sony. Due to fierce competition with Apple and Japanese brands, Samsung's market share in Japan fell to 3.4% in 2016, but it has steadily rebounded since 2017, accounting for 5.2% in 2017 and 6.4% in 2018.
In March of this year, Samsung opened a new Galaxy smartphone flagship store in downtown Tokyo to promote its new Galaxy S10 flagship model to launch 5G services during the 2020 Summer Olympics. In July, Samsung launched the Galaxy S10+ Olympic custom version in Japan.
