In 2002, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China listed the development of deep-sea manned submersibles as a major special project of the National High-Tech Research and Development Program (863 Program), and initiated the self-design and independent integration of the “Zhenlong” manned submersibles. From 2009 to 2012, successive successes in the 1000-meter, 3000-meter, 5000-meter and 7000-meter sea trials were achieved. In June 2012, the “Jilong” created a Chinese manned deep dive record of 7062 meters in the Mariana Trench.

Xu Weinan said that China’s manned deep-dive development should accelerate and advance toward the deepest part of the ocean. At the same time, it is necessary to speed up the development of unmanned deep-dive technology, and lead the way with innovations such as a new generation of artificial intelligence and accelerate the construction of manned and unmanned complementary advantages. , a cooperative submersible system.
