AMD's second quarter net profit of 35 million US dollars fell 70% year-on-year

AMD's second-quarter revenue exceeded Wall Street analysts' average expectations. Adjusted earnings per share were in line with expectations, but revenue outlook for the third quarter of FY19 was less than market expectations, causing the company's share price to fall more than 7% in after-hours trading.

In the fiscal quarter ended June 29, AMD's revenue was $1.53 billion, down 13% from $1.76 billion in the same period last year, which was better than analysts had expected. According to a Thomson Reuters survey, analysts on average expected AMD's second-quarter revenue to be $5.22 billion.

By business unit, AMD's revenue from the computing and graphics divisions in the second quarter was $940 million, less than $1.086 billion in the same period last year; operating profit was $22 million, compared to 1.17 in the same period last year. AMD's second-quarter net profit was $35 million, and diluted earnings per share were 3 cents, a performance that was less than the same period last year. In the second quarter of fiscal 2018, AMD's net profit was $116 million and earnings per share were 11 cents. Excluding certain one-off items (not in accordance with US GAAP), AMD's adjusted net profit for the second quarter was $92 million, and adjusted earnings per share were 8 cents, which is in line with analysts' previous expectations. According to a Thomson Reuters survey, analysts on average expected AMD's adjusted diluted earnings per share for the second quarter to be 8 cents.

AMD's second-quarter operating profit was $59 million, compared to an operating profit of $153 million in the same period last year. AMD's second-quarter gross margin was 41%, 4 percentage points higher than the 37% in the same period last year.

As of the end of the second quarter, AMD's total cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities were $1.1 billion, down from $1.16 billion as of March 30, 2019.

AMD expects company revenues to be approximately $1.8 billion in the third quarter of FY19, plus or minus $50 million, a 9% increase from the same period last year; gross margins not in accordance with US GAAP are approximately 43%. Thomson Reuters survey shows that analysts on average expect AMD's second-quarter revenue to be $1.95 billion, and earnings per share that are not in accordance with US GAAP are $0.23. .

AMD shares rose $0.39 in regular trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market on Tuesday, or 1.16%, to close at $33.87. In the subsequent after-hours trading, AMD's share price fell 2.47 US dollars, or 7.29%, to a price of 31.40 US dollars.
