Apple Watch will be able to update the system independently without the iPhone

Apple is currently nervously testing watchOS 6, and there is an indication that Apple Watch is likely to be able to perform software updates without an iPhone in the future.

After watchOS 6 Beta 1 was released, the "Software Update" function was added to the settings app, which means that Apple Watch can obtain software updates through OTA, but it was not tested at the time. After yesterday's Beta 2 release, it proved that the feature is available. However, it is said that the mechanism still needs to be confirmed on the (paired) iPhone side. I believe this should be temporary, and Apple should remove this step when it is officially released.

Before watchOS 6, if the user wants to update the Apple Watch system, it needs to be done in the Watch app on the iPhone side, which is a little inconvenient.

As Apple can see, the company is making Apple Watch more independent of the iPhone. Some core experiences no longer exist for iPhones. For example, cellular network support allows Apple Watch to make independent calls; the latest watch App Store also allows Apple Watch to download applications independently. If you follow this trend, I believe that it will not take long for a completely independent Apple Watch to appear, which will definitely attract more non-iPhone users to experience Apple's wearable devices.
