For motherboard manufacturers, it is not very difficult to migrate from PCIe 3.0 to PCIe 4.0.In order to meet the requirements of PCIe 4.0, some signaling optimization is needed for the routing between CPU and PCIe slot.

The good news is that many of the high-end flagship motherboards on the market have already provided excessive support for PCIe 3.0, so their seamless compatibility with PCIe 4.0 signals is not a big problem.

But before the launch of the Ruilong 3000 series, many media and users were speculating. In some old motherboards, it is still difficult to provide perfect support for PCIe 4.0.(For example, X470 or X370 chipset).

Earlier, it was reported that Gigabyte and other vendors would provide BIOS updates for some old motherboards to support PCIe 4.0. However, if AMD changes its mind, these BIOS will be difficult to meet with older users.

In other words,It is likely that only 500 Series chipsets will provide perfect support for PCIe 4.0 in the future. In addition to the first X570, AMD is expected to launch the B550 chipset later this year.

As for the reason for this, it is likely that AMD does not want to overturn the market reputation due to potential compatibility issues with PCIe 4.0.

Recently, Robert Hallock, product manager of AMD Ruilong, wrote in Reddit that:

Since the old motherboard can not provide strict signaling requirements for reliable operation of PCIe Gen 4, AMD does not want the chipset motherboard before X570 to be mixed on the market.

To avoid confusion for consumers, PCIe Gen 4 will no longer be an option when we release the official version of BIOS (AGESA 1000).

Despite our desire for backward compatibility, the risk of doing so is too great.

In other words,Users who want to experience PCIe 4.0 will have to buy new motherboards with 500 series chipsets.

Even though all the RYLON 3000 series processors can still run on the X470/X370 motherboard which provides BIOS update support, these CPUs will only work in PCIe 3.0 mode due to the compatibility of PCIe.

For users who have paid a lot for X370 or X470 motherboards, this is clearly a rather unpleasant news.

On the other hand, there will not be too many PCI 4.0 devices on the market in 2019. Even if AMD replaced Polaris mid-end product line with Navi GPU, PCIe 4.0 brought little improvement.

After all, the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0 x16 is enough to feed the flagship consumer graphics card on the market.

Of course, we are also hopeful to see some new PCIE 4.0 solid-state hard drives based on Phison E16 master control in the year, whose thermal design power consumption (TDP) may reach 8W.

Prices for high-performance PCIe 4.0 solid-state drives will scare away many consumers just before they become popular in 2020.
