MIT and NASA work together to develop flexible deformed wings or change future flight modes

Tencent Technologies News, April 2, according to foreign media reports, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and NASA have jointly developed a new wing that can change shape, improve flight, production and maintenance efficiency of aircraft.

In traditional aircraft wings, only the movement of wing accessories (such as flaps and ailerons) can change the direction of the aircraft. The wing, designed by MIT and NASA researchers, will be able to move as a whole.

The new wing is made up of hundreds of identical tiny pieces, which contain rigid and flexible components, making it lighter and more efficient than the traditional wing.

Because the wing can be adjusted according to the characteristics of each flight stage (take-off, landing, steering, etc.), it can perform better than the traditional wing. The traditional wing design is not to maximize the performance at any stage of flight.

The wing components are arranged in a lattice structure, which creates a lot of blank space and is covered by ultra-thin polymer materials. Combined with these designs, the material and structure of the wing make it as strong as rubber, though much less dense, and also as light as aerogels.
