Canadian Space Agency flight controller Kristen Facciol posted a message on Twitter saying she would support spacewalks on the console.

"Scorpio, my Twitter comment is boiling, because I am excited about the awesome things women will make in space, I like it very much," Facciol later wrote. "But I hope that one day this will become the norm!"

Facciol will provide some support on the ground console. The chief flight director is Mary Lawrence, and the main EVA flight controller is Jackie Kagey.

A NASA spokesperson said: "This approach has not been carefully planned; these spacewalks were originally planned for the fall." This means that spacewalks will now take place during the International Women's Month, a beautiful coincidence.

Astronaut Svetlana Savitskaya was the first woman to walk in space in 1984. Later that year, NASA astronaut Kathryn Dwyer Sullivan became the first American woman to walk in space. So far, all female spacewalkers have carried out extravehicular activities with male astronauts.

McClain is currently on the International Space Station. Koch plans to take the Russian "Sydney" spacecraft to the International Space Station on March 14th, along with astronauts Nick Hague and Alexey Ovchinin.

McClain, Koch, and Hague are all NASA's 2013 astronauts, and women in this class account for 50% of all students.

The spacewalk by Koch and McClain will last for about seven hours and will be broadcast on NASA. The schedule and tasks of the EVA mission can change, but if everything goes as planned, it will be a historic spacewalk.
