Microsoft: User login credentials for Outlook Mobile are no longer stored on the server

Before changing its name to Outlook Mobile, Microsoft's APP, which handles e-mail on iOS and Android, was called Acompli. Before its acquisition in 2014, the startup offered users revolutionary email features, including Focused Inbox. But this feature stores users'emails and passwords on their servers, and uses these data to access your inbox and perform scanning and sorting operations to highlight important emails.

After the acquisition, Microsoft continued to use this architecture, using its proprietary REST API to communicate with Azure servers, which then had access to mail servers that stored real mail. This has made many customers, including the U.S. government, nervous, so the government has made it impossible for government workers to use Outlook Mobile applications.

But since last month, Microsoft has been turning to a direct jump. In terms of support, Microsoft said

Since December 2018, Microsoft will migrate customers to native Microsoft synchronization technology and remove the Stateless Protocol Translator component from the Office 365 architecture. With this native Microsoft synchronization technology, Outlook on iOS and Android will be directly connected to Office to ensure that data receives end-to-end protection from HTTP TLS.

This has several advantages:

Eliminating mid-tier services

Using native Microsoft synchronization technology to synchronize data in APP and Office 365 does not require any mid-tier services.

Reduce latency

By replacing the proprietary Outlook device API and Stateless Protocol Translator, end-to-end latency between the application and Office 365 can be reduced.

Other Office 365 instance support

Removing Stateless Protocol Translator for data connections ensures that Microsoft supports other unique Office 365 instances, such as Office 365 Government Community Cloud High and Office 365 Service of Defense.

Protocol integration

At present, each Outlook client platform uses different data synchronization protocols, which hinders the ability to rapidly innovate and deploy new functions on all Outlook clients. The native Microsoft synchronization technology used by Outlook on iOS and Android has been used by Windows 10 Mail clients for many years and will be used by Outlook for Mac in the future.

New function of unlocking

Native Microsoft Synchronization technology enables iOS and Android-side Outlook to make full use of native Office 365 functions, including S/MIME, Microsoft Information Protection Label and Shared Mailbox. More Office 365 features will be released soon after the architecture is updated.
