MongoDBAnnounceIts open source license is switched from GNU AGPLv3 toServer Side Public License (SSPL). The new license will apply to the new version of MongoDB Community Server and the old version that has been patched.
AGPLv3 and SSPL are no different in terms of free use, free modification, and redistribution of code. The biggest difference is that MongoDB wants revenue from software as a service. SSPL explicitly requires cloud computing companies hosting MongoDB instances to either obtain business licenses or open source their service code to the community. AGPLv3, by contrast, only declares that the modified code needs to be fed back to the community, but does not involve any software as a service.
