Helio P70 or future attack with independent NPU

On October 13th, according to Taiwanese media Digitimes, the next P70 of MediaTek's Helio P series will be released at the end of October this year, and related mobile phones will be launched.

According to the news that has been exposed, the Helio P70 will use the same 12nm process as the P60. It is also manufactured by TSMC. It is also an 8-core design. It also includes four A73 large cores and four A53 small cores, and the GPU models are also Mali-G72 - From the point of view of these information, it seems that P70 and P60 are no different.

In terms of indispensable AI, the P70 of MediaTek will be equipped with an NPU (Neural Processing Unit), but the specific news about this NPU is unknown. However, the Helio P60, which has been released in the first half of the year, has been equipped with a dedicated artificial intelligence processing module APU, which adopts a dual-core architecture and is based on the algorithmic enhancement of the VPU (Image Processing Unit) built into the Helio P30.

Therefore, from the perspective of product logic, it is highly probable that the P70 is equipped with a dedicated AI processing module, but it is not known whether it has an inheritance or progressive relationship with the APU installed on the P60.

In addition, from the perspective of product benchmarking, if the P60 sword refers to Qualcomm Snapdragon 660, then the P70 is undoubtedly running the Snapdragon 710 and Snapdragon 670 that Qualcomm just released this year. From the perspective of the product timeline, it is also reasonable for MediaTek to launch new products in the first half of the year to compete with similar products on the market.

Will MediaTek walk out of the quagmire?

Undoubtedly, the loss of the Meizu Pro 7/Plus with the Helio X30 was a big blow for MediaTek; since then, MediaTek seems to be in a quagmire. In the case that the outside world is not optimistic about its high-end chips, MediaTek decided to slash and focus on the mid-market. As a result, the P60 equipped with a dual-core APU has no doubt assumed the role of a saver.

From the perspective of product acceptance, MediaTek Helio P60 has been adopted by many manufacturers, such as OPPO R15 Standard Edition, Nokia X5, vivo Z3i and other products; but overall, Helio P60 is still better than brand recognition. The same level of chips of the dragon has been lowered. The above products are all works of mobile phone manufacturers for price-sensitive users, but they are not enough to assume the role of the same level of products. This is also the helplessness of MediaTek.

However, after the P60 was first shipped to consumers in April 2018, the performance of MediaTek seems to have picked up.

According to MediaTek's 2018 related results, revenue for the first quarter of 2018 was NT$49.65 billion (US$1.7 billion), down 17.8% from the previous quarter and down 11.5% from the same period last year. However, in the second quarter, MediaTek's revenue was lower than the previous quarter. It increased by 21.8% to NT$60.48 billion (US$1.99 billion), an increase of 4.1% year-on-year. Among them, MediaTek's revenue in June 2018 reached NT$21.06 billion, a record high in nine months.

Of course, it seems that the performance of the rebound is not entirely due to P60; in addition to P60, MediaTek also has low-end chips such as P40 and P22, which enrich MediaTek's SoC product line. However, as a fist product under the MediaTek SoC system, MediaTek P60 is still important.

In addition, some observers said that thanks to the increase in shipments of MediaTek Helio P60, P22 and A22 SoC chips, the company's revenue reached NT$67.03 billion (US$2.15 billion) in Q18 in 2018, a year-on-year increase. 10.8%, refreshing the revenue record for nearly seven quarters. If the data is true, then MediaTek's Q3 performance can be said to be very rare.

P60 is only the beginning of a new road for MediaTek, and the next P70 to be released will become another important variable for MediaTek to get out of the quagmire. We will wait and see.
