On the afternoon of September 17th, Amazon AWS announced the establishment of the first personal intelligence research institute in the Asia-Pacific region in Shanghai. It will introduce AWS global talent resources and conduct Chinese-oriented research to support the application of Chinese customers. Zhang Wei, a professor at New York University in Shanghai, will be in charge of the institute.
According to Amazon, the institute will build a fully functional team that includes researchers, developers, engineers and technical project managers. The team will conduct multilingual natural language processing research in Chinese, participate in and develop the open source deep learning ecosystem, provide tools for Chinese customers to count and support application in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
In addition, the Shanghai Institute of Artificial Intelligence will train local machine learning talents, collaborate with Chinese universities and research institutions to promote artificial intelligence research projects, and build joint research laboratories.
According to public information, Zhang Wei is a professor of computer science at New York University in Shanghai and a professor of global networks at New York University. He has extensive experience in large-scale distributed computing theory and practice, and its intersection with machine learning, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. After joining the laboratory, he will still retain his teaching position.
