Founded by Ben Kacyra, CyArk is also the creator of one of the world's first 3D laser scanner systems. As Google explained through The Keyword, Kacyra was prompted to create CyArk. After he saw the destruction of the 1,500-year-old Buddhist statues in Afghanistan by the Taliban, he decided to figure out monuments and buildings that could disappear in a digital way.

That was in 2001. For the past 17 years, CyArk has been trying to photograph and map these places. With a new partnership with Google, users of Arts & Culture can now use the app to browse 25 different historical locations in 18 countries.

CyArk not only tries to prevent these structures from being affected by wars or catastrophes, but also a lot of travel-related damage is a problem, which is why we will see monuments like Chichen Itza on the list. Users can browse the list of available websites on the Google Open Heritage page on their desktop, but they can also browse the websites on their mobile devices or using Daydream by downloading the Google Arts&Culture app.
