Amazon plans to open six new Amazon Go checkout grocery stores this year

Amazon calls it "Just Walk Out Technology," which uses some very powerful artificial intelligence and sensor systems to avoid the use of cashiers and security guards. Unlike traditional stores, it uses cameras installed around the store to track which items the customer chooses and puts into the shopping basket. When the user walks out of the store, it automatically charges them the correct amount. Insiders told Recode that up to six new Amazon Go stores will be open in 2018.

Although Amazon will open some new stores in Seattle, the industry will open new stores in cities such as Los Angeles. It is estimated that Seattle has at least three suitable places. In the meantime, Amazon is reportedly negotiating with developer Rick Caruso to put at least one Amazon Go store in his Los Angeles shopping mall, The Grove.

Amazon Go did not completely abandon its staff, though the number of people involved has dropped substantially compared to traditional convenience stores. Although there is no cashier - there is virtually no register - because of the monitoring system that handles the business, there's still a team at Amazon Go that will reposition shelves. In the current Seattle store, there is also a live kitchen where you can see a team making fresh food. Other employees have a responsibility to help shoppers and check the ID of a customer purchasing an age-restricted item (such as alcohol).
