Compared to traditional satellite Internet services Viasat and HughesNet, Starlink plans to use near-Earth satellite constellations to provide better coverage and lower latency.

SpaceX declined to give details of the launch, but Elon Musk confirmed for the first time in a Twitter message Wednesday morning local time that the test satellite was on board the Falcon 9 rocket.

According to documents submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) by SpaceX, the company plans to deploy 4,425 small satellites in near-Earth orbit at altitudes of 1,100 km to 1,325 km above the ground.
