Phone addiction is often referred to as "Nomophobia." Instituto Delete was founded by the psychologist Anna Lucia King in 2013 in the Department of Psychology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Its purpose is to help those who have cell phones and internet addicts. The focus of treatment is to find a healthy way to use our cell phones instead of completely obliterating them from our lives, but by adjusting their use.

Eduardo Guedes, research fellow and consultant with the Digital Institute at the Institute for Digital Media, said: "When virtual reality is disrupted, use becomes abusive and the level of addiction can easily get trapped when it becomes uncontrollable."

When they arrive at the Delete Institute, researchers test patients and professionally assess whether they have any anxiety, social phobia, or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Next, divide the patients into three groups based on their degree and type of addiction and then receive personalized treatment.

Institute staff hold weekly meetings to allow patients to share their experiences and try different things, such as watching movies or reading books. Patients also need to learn strategies to avoid overuse of the device. It is reported that some patients even need medication.

However, this effect is not limited to psychology. Some patients even have cervical problems due to looking down at their cell phones, and they also need special treatment.

The Delete Institute is the first institution in Brazil to specialize in the treatment of mobile and Internet addiction. In the United States, there are various programs to help with this type of addiction, such as reSTART and Caron treatment centers, but these services are often lacking globally.
