Canonical/Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth talked about the companyWhy did you decide to abandon the Unity desktop?. He said that he and the other person in charge of listed companies reached a consensus. To be listed, we need to show the profitability of the company to potential investors. Unity, Ubuntu phones, Unity 8 and integration are obviously not. Lack of profitability may mean the death of Unity, but the broader Ubuntu program is very healthy.
Shuttleworth said he was proud that Ubuntu had changed to sustainability in the last seven years, and even if he was hit by a car tomorrow, the Ubuntu project could continue.
Losing Unity may be a serious blow to desktop users, but it helps to balance other parts of the company.
