It is good to see that Facebook has been able to effectively deal with the threat from snap, a rapidly growing emerging enterprise. Facebook with its bright products and social applications, has continued to weaken the meteor before the SNAP growth rate. This is a case study of large companies using their current strengths, serious self iteration to face the threat of competitors. This also reminds me of my time at Google, Facebook is a rapidly growing threat to Google at the time, our team at that time could make better use of the competitive advantage, the following is a reflection of the Google Open Social and some of the lessons.
Facebook vs Open Social
In 2007 - 08 years, the impact of the Facebook surge, they collected a large amount of user information, over time, which clearly poses a threat to Google's advertising business.
The concept is simple: create a technical standard that allows all social networks to be implemented and supported.
There are already a lot of social networks that agree to integrate, MySpace, YAHOO, Hi5, Bebo, Orkut, Friendster, LinkedIn, and many other companies are talking about it. At that time, the value proposition is not lost to Facebook, developers to build the value of the exchange can write applications and run applications anywhere, in theory, it will get more users.
In the end, Google application engine is only applicable to the then Python, which limits the Open Social has a more complete developer story. Third party developers should be able to write applications in any language, like other Java based API and OpenSocial interfaces, and then deploy and extend them directly on their applications. The opposite, however, is that these application developers have to seek help from AWS.
My Space began to decline in interest, YAHOO has never really achieved a major property, Google's main product Orkut, only in Brazil and India such a high-profile place has a high share. Google has been providing and strengthening the form of a major container selection, YouTube may have been able to mark the basic information. If there is no such a strong partner, is not worth compared to the competition and Facebook this thing, Google hopes to gain market share from the hands of the Facebook, but does not undertake these functions will be to create their own core products, and use the existing network to achieve rapid growth, in the end, they lack the social product DNA.
OpenSocial has never been able to slow down the development of Facebook, despite all the efforts of the team. Over time, the OpenSocial project has unexpectedly become a standard for companies led by IBM and others. But this is a good reminder, if you want to build a highly competitive products in a certain space, you must have a DNA product and outstanding talent, and perfect execution (to find a suitable partner, at different aspects and so on). Especially if you're competing with powerful enemies like Facebook.
